iPhone 2.1 to Hit Today? – [Updatedx2]

ALERTWE’VE MOVED TO RAZORIANFLY.COM

[Update - 01.09.08] – (21.29pm)

This information was false, we apologise for publishing it.
The time now is 21.30pm GMT, Apple did not release 2.1 today.

Original Article:
NickSpohn of Mac Rumors, recently pointed out a previous trend in Apple software releases, which could suggest they are now gearing up to release the next revision of the iPhone 2.0 software, version 2.1, later today.

He notes:

Based on last years firmware updates, and now this years, I think it is safe to say that 2.1 should be released September 1st, or the first week of September. If you notice with the 2.0.x updates:

2.1 – September 1st – Monday
2.0.2 – August 18th – Monday
2.0.1 – August 4th – Monday

Which were 2 weeks apart exactly, and i doubt was just a random coincidence.
Take it with a grain of salt if you wish.

Nick’s thinking is that as Apple released 2.0.2 for iPhone on Monday August 18th 2008, and that that is exactly 2 weeks today, Apple could be gearing for another release today. Not only that, if you look at the gap between the release of iPhone 2.0.1 and 2.0.2, this is also exactly 2 weeks. Coincidence?

Software releases for iPhone and iPod touch lines are usually released to the public between 10-12am EST (6-8pm GMT) – Meaning if the rumor is true, we still have a couple of hours to go. As stated by Nick himself, this is a shot in the dark based on previous trends in release, and should not be taken as gospel, just yet.

Apple confirms September iPhone update. (2.1, Push?) – [Briefly]

Apple tells iPhone users to stay calm, fixes on the way ...

ALERTWE’VE MOVED TO RAZORIANFLY.COM

It’s not a secret that, we as iPhone users have been having major problems. Since Apple changed the frameworks and launched an entirely new version of the iPhone OS, iPhone 2.0, users of the iPhone have been less than satisfied with the performance and stability of their device.

The recent 2.0.2 update partially addressed 3G connectivity issues, as well as plugged various bugs to make the platform half stable again (the 1.X.X days). While the update brought stability in the form of reducing the amount and frequency of system crashes and resets, the stability of iPhone’s third party application’s, have yet to be addressed.

In a very rare occurrence, Apple has actually confirmed in advance, that this security fix is coming.
In an e-mail sent to MacWorld – Jennifer Bowcock, an Apple representative, outlined:

“The minor iPhone security issue which surfaced this week is fixed in a software update which will be released in September.”

This update is also said to come at the same time that Apple completely revamp their ever popular iPod product line. Expected, is a minor re-design to iPod touch with the addition of GPS, as well as a revised design to the “most popular” iPod in the world, the iPod nano. At this special event Apple will be holding in September, it is expected that iPod touch will be the first device to get the 2.1 update, shortly followed by the iPhone later in the month. This major update also includes full push capability for third party applications, which need to sustain a persistent IP connection in situations when an application is closed and needs to deliver alerts to it’s users.

Finally the update will address the huge security flaw found in iPhone OS, just a couple of days ago.

Highly anticipated, in summary, the update should:

- Plug the ‘passcode’ security flaw
- Fix iPhone app crashing
- Include 3G connectivity improvements (partially addressed by 2.0.2)
- Include “Push” background services for applications.

Breaking: iPhone 2.1 Will Break OpenClip Framework.

ALERTWE’VE MOVED TO RAZORIANFLY.COM

I recently told you all about Zac White, a college student from Oklahoma University who had modified and adopted the copy and paste framework found in the iPhone application MagicPad [App Store] to work outside of a sand-boxed environment and in partnership with other applications.

Apple being Apple, has announced that software 2.1 will completely break the Open Clip framework, for both iPhone and iPod touch, by disabling the basic mechanism OpenClip functions on – the ability to write into other application’s shared spaces. Apple explained Zac’s ‘workaround’ was just that, a non-the-less, clever, exploit of a loophole in iPhone OS. They stated Zac’s method was not exactly running on safe ground.

First no MMS, then no tethering, and now you’ve taken copy and paste too.

“See this Apple, this is the light at the end of the tunnel,
now look at this, this is you with a huge boulder.”

The team over at open clip have since posted an update in light of this news.

iTunes 8.0, Snow Leopard gets Bluray, September iPod Updates – [Briefly]

ALERTWE’VE MOVED TO RAZORIANFLY.COM

Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, has claimed to have new information of upcoming iPod refreshes and iTunes updates. In the video above, Rose outlines what rumors have been going around the blog-o-sphere recently, and confirms that some of them have substance behind them, also claiming he has ’seen’ pictures of the next iPod nano. Among the claims:

- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see above)
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.
- iTunes 8.0 (“it’s a big update w/new features”).
- Blu-Ray support coming in Mac OS X 10.5.6

Rose claims that all of the above is coming sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. Interestingly, Rose also notes that the revamped iPod touch will be the first and only device to ship with the 2.1 software. Apple will then release the 2.1 update for iPhone, “shortly” after. The 2.1 software is rumored to include ‘Push’ capabilities which will integrate with Apple’s remote cloud to form the new ‘Push Notification Service’. This service is said by Apple, to keep a persistent IP connection to applications that need it, (for example, Mobile Chat 3), to provide status updates when an application is closed.

After saying this, Apple recently seeded a beta of 2.1 to it’s developers, and surprisingly had completely removed all ‘Push’ capabilities from the version of iPhone OS.
